Rubbing a liquid spill creates friction and heat, which physically pushes the pigment molecules deeper into the hollow fibers of the cotton or polyester. Instead, always blot with a clean, dry cloth. Your goal is to lift the liquid out of the fabric, not push it through.

2. Wine and Acidic Stains

Red wine contains tannins which act like a natural dye. If a spill occurs on a white cloth, blot it and then apply a small amount of club soda or cold water. The carbonation can help "bubble" the stain to the surface. Never use hot water on wine, as it will "cook" the tannins into the fiber, making them permanent.
